Think about the most common object in any office, school, or home printer around the world: a sheet of A4 paper. It feels so standard, so perfectly proportioned, that we rarely give it a second thought. Yet, behind this everyday object lies a masterpiece of mathematical elegance and efficiency, a system that brought order to a chaotic world of mismatched paper sizes. This system is defined by ISO 216:2007 – Writing paper and certain classes of printed matter — Trimmed sizes — A and B series.
This international standard is the reason why a document printed in Lucknow fits perfectly into an envelope made in London and can be filed neatly in a cabinet in Los Angeles. It’s a quiet but powerful force for global harmonisation, simplifying design, manufacturing, and international trade.
Understanding the simple genius of this standard is key to appreciating its universal impact. As a leading accredited inspection body, we at TNV inspection body provide expert, impartial verification of these crucial dimensions, ensuring that the paper products you buy or sell meet the precise specifications that the world relies on.
ISO 216:2007 is the international standard that defines the finished (“trimmed”) sizes of writing paper and other printed materials. It specifies the dimensions for the globally recognized “A” series (including A4) and the less common “B” series, based on a unique and highly efficient aspect ratio.
The brilliance of ISO 216 lies in three core principles that work in perfect harmony.
The fundamental principle is that every sheet has its sides in the ratio of 1:√2 (approximately 1:1.414).
The entire system starts with the A0 sheet. It is defined as having an area of exactly one square metre.
Every subsequent paper size is created by simply halving the previous one.
The A Series: This is the primary series for general and office use.
The B Series: The B series was designed to provide intermediate sizes not covered by the A series. A B-size sheet is the geometric mean between the corresponding A-size and the next largest A-size.
