Your pre-shipment inspection passed. The goods are ready. The container arrives at your factory. And then, without independent supervision, things go wrong wrong goods loaded, cartons damaged during stuffing, quantities short-shipped, or the container sealed without proper documentation.
Container loading inspection is the quality checkpoint that happens at the loading dock and it is the most overlooked service in India’s inspection ecosystem. Most exporters only think about it after a problem has already cost them.
This guide covers what container loading inspection services cost in India in 2026, what determines the price, what the service actually includes, and why it is worth every rupee.
Container loading inspection (also called Container Loading Supervision or CLS) is a third-party inspection service where a qualified inspector is present at your factory, warehouse, or logistics point when goods are being stuffed into a shipping container.
The inspector verifies:
The output is a loading supervision report with photographs of goods being loaded, container condition, seal number, and quantity verification all timestamped.
Container loading supervision charges in India are typically lower than pre-shipment inspection because the scope is more defined and the inspection is faster for standard shipments.
Standard CLS cost from an accredited inspection company in India (2026):
Container Type | Typical CLS Cost |
Single 20ft container | ₹6,000 – ₹9,000 |
Single 40ft / 40ft HC container | ₹7,000 – ₹11,000 |
Multiple containers (same factory, same day) | ₹10,000 – ₹18,000 (combined) |
Reefer / hazardous cargo container | ₹9,000 – ₹15,000 |
Important: These rates apply to accredited inspection companies. Non-accredited operators may quote ₹1,500–₹3,000 but their loading reports are not accepted by buyers requiring independent third-party documentation.
Single container = single inspector-day, one base rate. Multiple containers at the same factory in one shift often attract a discounted combined rate typically 30-40% less than booking separately. If containers load simultaneously at different bays, a second inspector is needed, effectively doubling the fee.
A 20ft container with uniform cartons of the same product is the simplest CLS job typically half to three-quarters of a day. A 40ft high-cube container with multiple SKUs, mixed carton sizes, and palletized sections takes longer to supervise properly and may approach a full day.
Reefer containers, hazardous cargo, or oversized equipment require inspectors with specific knowledge of loading requirements and cost more accordingly.
As with all inspection services, location drives cost. Factories in major export hubs JNPT container yards near Mumbai, ICD near Pune or Ludhiana, Tirupur textile zones, Mundra or Nhava Sheva environs have readily available inspectors with minimal travel. Remote inland factory locations with large transport distances to port attract travel supplements.
Always confirm: Is travel to my factory location included in the CLS quote?
Container loading is often dictated by shipping line schedules, not working hours. Loading that starts before 6:00 AM, runs past 6:00 PM, or falls on a Sunday or public holiday typically attracts overtime or out-of-hours surcharges of 25–50% above the base rate.
Example: Standard daytime rate: ₹8,000 Same job, Sunday loading: ₹10,000–₹12,000
Plan loading schedules during standard working hours wherever possible. Urgency costs money.
Some buyers require the CLS inspector to also:
Each additional scope element adds time and therefore cost. Confirm what your buyer actually requires and get the inspection company to quote for the specific scope.
The same principle applies as with all inspection services: accredited Type A companies cost more than non-accredited operators and their reports are worth infinitely more when disputes arise.
A loading report from a non-accredited company, or from a company that the shipper’s freight forwarder recommended (potential conflict of interest), carries no independent credibility. For LC payment where loading documentation is required, or for buyer qualification where independent loading supervision is specified, only accredited Type A body reports are accepted.
For factories in remote industrial zones inland container depots far from inspectors’ base cities, or factories in tier-3 cities travel cost and potentially accommodation must be factored in. Some inspection companies include a defined travel radius in the base rate and charge supplements beyond it. Always ask upfront.
Many Indian exporters ask: if I already have a pre-shipment inspection done, do I still need CLS?
The answer depends on your risk profile but they are different services:
Aspect | Pre-Shipment Inspection | Container Loading Inspection |
When | Before goods are packed (80-100% packed) | At the moment of loading |
What’s checked | Product quality, AQL, packaging, labelling | What actually goes into the container |
Main risk prevented | Defective goods shipped | Wrong/damaged goods loaded |
Quantity verification | Carton count and packing list | Units actually loaded into container |
Container condition | Not applicable | Yes checked before stuffing |
Seal documentation | Not applicable | Yes seal number photographed |
Typical cost | ₹8,000–₹15,000 | ₹6,000–₹11,000 |
Both together provide complete pre-shipment quality coverage PSI confirms the goods are right, CLS confirms the right goods went into the right container.
