Strategy, risk, and performance all sit on top of one thing: how an organization is governed. When the people at the top set a clear purpose and hold the organization to it, good decisions follow. When governance is weak, even a strong business drifts. ISO 37000:2021 is the first international standard to put good governance into a single, shared framework.
This page explains what ISO 37000:2021 is, the principles it sets out, and how TNV Inspection Division reviews an organization against it. TNV is a UAF accredited inspection body operating under ISO/IEC 17020:2012.
What Is ISO 37000:2021?
ISO 37000:2021 is the international standard for the governance of organizations. Its full title is Governance of organizations — Guidance. It gives governing bodies the principles and practices they need to meet their responsibilities, so the organization they govern can actually fulfil its purpose.
It applies to any organization, whatever its type, size, location, or purpose, and it speaks not only to the board but to the stakeholders affected by how the organization is run. One thing to be clear on: ISO 37000 is guidance. It is not a certifiable requirements standard. It is a framework to govern by, and to assess governance against.
The Principles of Good Governance
ISO 37000 distils governance into a set of principles, organized around a clear hierarchy:
- The primary principle is purpose. Everything else exists to serve the organization’s reason for being.
- The foundational principles are value generation, strategy, and accountability. These translate purpose into direction and answerability.
- The enabling principles support the rest, covering areas such as leadership, ethical and responsible behaviour, stakeholder engagement, data-informed decisions, risk governance, social responsibility, and viability and performance over time.
Read together, they describe what a well-governed organization looks like in practice, not just on an org chart.
Why Does ISO 37000 Matter for Your Business?
Governance is what investors, regulators, and partners look at when they decide whether to trust an organization. A board that can show its governance follows a recognized international framework signals seriousness in a way a mission statement cannot. Internally, the framework gives leaders a structured way to check that purpose, strategy, and accountability actually line up, rather than assuming they do.
An independent review against ISO 37000 turns “we are well governed” into something supported by evidence, which matters most precisely when scrutiny is highest.
How TNV Uses ISO 37000 as the Reference Standard
A credible governance review needs a benchmark, not just opinion. ISO 37000 is that benchmark. As a UAF accredited inspection body under ISO/IEC 17020, we take the principles and practices of ISO 37000 as the defined criteria and assess the organization against them.
Because ISO 37000 is guidance rather than a certifiable requirements standard, what we provide is an independent assessment and gap review against the framework, not a certificate. The value is in the independence: a clear, outside view of how governance measures up, recorded against a recognized international reference.
How We Review an Organization Against ISO 37000
Our review follows the principles of the standard, so the whole governance picture is covered. In practice, an ISO 37000 review by TNV looks at the following.
- Purpose and strategy. We examine how purpose is defined and how strategy flows from it.
- Governance structures and accountability. We review roles, responsibilities, delegation, and how the governing body holds the organization to account.
- Leadership and culture. We assess how values and ethical behaviour are set and lived.
- Stakeholder engagement. We look at how the organization identifies and engages those it affects.
- Risk governance and decision-making. We review how risk is governed and how decisions are informed by reliable data.
- Responsibility and viability. We check how social responsibility and long-term performance are built into governance.
Our team works through these using document review, board and policy analysis, and interviews with leaders and stakeholders. We record observations with evidence and keep you informed of progress. The deliverable is a detailed review report: where governance aligns with ISO 37000, where the gaps are, and practical recommendations to strengthen it.
Our UAF Accreditation Explained
TNV Global Limited (TNV) is accredited by the United Accreditation Foundation (UAF) for inspection, under ISO/IEC 17020:2012 – Conformity assessment – Requirements for bodies providing various types of inspection. We hold that accreditation now, and we keep it through regular surveillance and witnessed inspections.
UAF is a signatory of the IAF MLA and the APAC MRA, the international recognition arrangements that let a report carry weight outside the country it was written in, and our accreditation covers work across most of Europe, the Americas, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. So “internationally recognized” is something we can show you, not just say.
What Our Accreditation Means for You
Your report carries weight, because it comes from an independent body with recognized accreditation rather than from an internal exercise. You get real independence, because ISO/IEC 17020 keeps us impartial and clear of any tie to the organization we assess. And you always know the boundaries of the job: what we review, the method we use, and the standard we measure against are set out before we start.
Who Should Use ISO 37000?
- Governing bodies and boards setting the direction of an organization.
- Executives and company secretaries responsible for governance practice.
- Investors, owners, and stakeholders who want assurance about how an organization is run.
- Any organization, public, private, or not-for-profit, that wants to benchmark and improve its governance.
